We are really struggling to keep the country together on the home front as our soldiers of all political affiliations successfully keep each other’s back on the battle field. When your life is threatened, you don’t ask the other person in your tank if he lays tfillin, votes this party of that, or goes to the beach on Shabbat. Your uniform and the weapons you carry erase all symbols of civilian life that have no place in the fight against an enemy that wants you all dead.
The media have been asked not to entertain politicization on their broadcasts as these hurt the delicate fabric of society that was reeling from anti-government vitriol raging on the streets before Oct 7th broke through all the noise with a blast louder than anything we have ever heard before.
The country responded to the call for unity: the phrase “Together we will win” is in the corner of every television screen regardless of the channel and its usual political leaning. It is on bulletin boards, store fronts, cars, and more. And along with that call for unity came the call for not ignoring, as we have done in the past, open support for terrorists, this time, support for Hamas and praise for their massacre, torture, and abduction of civilians in the Gaza Envelop communities. There were apprehension and interrogations of people from a wide range of professions, Jews and Arabs alike, who published anything that could be construed as supportive of Hamas and against the war to eliminate the terror group.
Some of these arrests resulted in petitions being filed for their release under the claim that free speech in a democracy demands it.

אתמול [6.11] זומנתי לחקירה דחופה במחלקה לאכיפה משמעתית של נציבות שירות המדינה. נחקרתי במשך 3 שעות על כתיבתי הפובליציסטית ופעילותי החברתית במסגרת מחאת קפלן.

החקירה כללה תשאול מדוקדק לגבי עמדותיי הפוליטיות כפי שהן עולות ממאמרים שונים שפרסמתי בעיתון הארץ בעת האחרונה. ערימה גדולה של מאמרי בעיתון הארץ מסומנים ומודגשים הונחה על השולחן והחוקר הקריא פסקאות וטענות נבחרות מתוכם וביקש את אישורי שאני עומד מאחרי הכתוב. התבקשתי לחתום על כל אחד מהעמודים המצולמים ולאשר את תוכנו.
השאלות כללו התיחסות לראש הממשלה, לרעייתו, ולחוקים שונים שהקואליציה מקדמת ושלהם התייחסתי במאמרי הדעה שלי.

נשאלתי האם זה נראה לי ראוי שעובד מדינה בדרגתי ישתתף במחאת קפלן, ינאם בעצרות של אקדמיה ובריאות נפש ויביע דעה על חקיקה בנושאים של בריאות הנפש ואתיקה רפואית.
But
הסברתי לחוקר החביב (בן קיבוץ איילת השחר ושוטר לשעבר) שאני אינטלקטואל, רופא, מורה ומטפל ושכתיבה פובליציסטית ואקדמית היא חלק מייעודי ושאני דווקא רואה קשר בין עבודתי הציבורית לבין הגנה על זכויות הפרט ושאין בכוונתי לחדול מכתיבה ומהבעת דעה. הסברתי לחוקר את הקשר שבין בריאות נפש לדמוקרטיה ואת ההבדל שבין הסתה ורדיפת הרוח והמחשבה לבין אהבת מולדת וחרדה לגורלה. זו היתה שיחה קומית ומזעזעת כאחת, שבה החוקר והנחקר מתחלפים קצת בתפקידים וכל אחד בתורו מזדעזע מהנעשה במדינה.

רק במידה ויוחלט על העמדתי לדין משמעתי.

כששאלתי את החוקר אם יצא לו לקיים חקירות נוספות כאלה בתקופה האחרונה הוא חשב קצת ואמר ״היה לי כאן מישהו שהעלה ברשת החברתית תמונה של חטופים עם דגל של פלסטין שחקרתי אותו. אבל אתה באמת בליגה אחרת, כי ברור שאתה בנאדם שאוהב את המדינה. אז לא נראה לי שיש לך ממה לדאוג.״

An ultra-Orthodox leftist journalist, Israel Frey, who wrote that he was praying for the child victims of the kibbutzim and Gaza alike, is still in hiding, after fleeing his home when a mob gathered outside.
